DAYS GONE
Hand to hand combat

By Roger Knowles @TheGeekKeeper, on September 9th, 2017

In the previous Days Gone article we discussed everything we knew so far about the game. However there was one area that I didn’t go into detail to much about and that was the combat.

I've decided, seeing as we have not directly heard about the combat in the game from Bend Studio that I would look through the footage and see if could piece together how the hand to hand combat plays out.
When looking into hand to hand combat the first bit of footage that did show this off was the one show at E3 2017 when Deacon is knocked off his bike. After he recovers from the shock of falling off, Deacon is instantly grabbed from behind and an ‘X’ button prompt appears and indicates the user must click to build up Deacon to help him break from the hold. Once this has been achieved (after an unspecified amount of tapping), the sequence changes to prompt the user to click 'TRIANGLE' at a specified moment. Once achieved Deacon counters one of the attackers and instant kills the one who has grabbed him.

Deacon then charges the other attackers, pushes him again a tree and kills him by strangling him with some rope. There is no indication however how this is achieved by the user. No button prompts appear on screen and almost seem as if it is entirely automated. Which I can’t image to being the case, seeing as the previous encounter which had literally just happened had been interactive.

The next sequence I spotted which was a little unusual was when a Freaker is suspended by a tree and grabs Deacon as he walks past. Deacon instantly pulls out his knife and slices the Freakers throat. There is no button prompt until the very end and it only pops on screen for second and actually highlights red as if the player failed to achieve what he or she was supposed to do. It’s almost as if it isn’t supposed to have been shown in the video (it’s literally that quick). Either way, if the user had failed the encounter there didn’t seem to be any hindrance for doing so. The Freaker did not kill Deacon and there was no indication on screen that he had been slightly injured. But of course this was a demo shown at E3 so I very much doubt they were going to kill Deacon at this moment but I question why leave the button prompt in and why show it going red?

The last bit of hand to hand combat that I saw from this demo, was actually a sneaky take down. After alerting a guard, Deason sneaks into the undergrowth and snaps the guard's neck from behind. Simple but effective, Deacon didn’t move the body to hide and there was no button prompt to do so. Which seems strange when the task is to enter the enemy camp sneakerly. I think Deacon needs to speak to Solid Snake.

The stealth kills are shown off a little more detail in the 2nd demo of Days Gone from E3 2017. Deacon is doing the same mission but approaching from a different angle and in the snow. Deacon moves up behind his first victim and stabs him with his survival knife but is also given a button prompt to do so. Deacon then pulls out a metal pipe that he has stored on his back and attacks (with very crude and simple moves) the second enemy. Then finishes him off with a stamp to the head. Not to sure at this time if an enemy can recover and gather himself and return to the fight if Deacon doesn’t do a takedown on them.
In the first demo Deacon didn’t have many weapons on him but in this one he definitely has. To take out group out he throws Molotov and then kills an enemy who wasn’t set on fire with an easy swing to the head with an ax. I don’t want to get into the different types of weapons in Days Gone to much at this present moment but I will in the future.
